Actors Theatre of Indiana
strives to advance theatre as an artform by dedicating itself to
the preservation and advancement of theatre and musical theatre alike. ATI accomplishes this
by providing unfettered creative opportunities for the leading artists of today and tomorrow while

Actors Theatre of Indiana's Board of Trustees is accountable for making the artistic aspirations
and financial well being of the organization a priority.  Their responsibilities include the development
of broad policy for the Theatre and serving as stewards of Actors Theatre of Indiana for the
larger community.

   
 

 


David Arland – Trustee

For more than 20 years, Dave Arland has helped consumers, listeners, and voters to understand
complex issues and complicated technologies.  With a background in broadcast journalism and a
degree from the acclaimed media arts program of Butler University in 1985, Dave was an

award-winning journalist for four years at WIBC and WIRE Radio in Indianapolis.  Tapped in 1988

to serve as Executive Assistant to Indianapolis Mayor Bill Hudnut, Dave coordinated press relations

for the popular four-term Mayor.  He responded to crises, managed overall City responsibilities to

public safety and political issues, andhe even pulled together a tree planting for President George

H. W. Bush in downtown Indianapolis forArbor Day in 1990. 

Joining Thomson's RCA electronics business in 1991, Dave spent 16 years moving through various
positions at Thomson - from Community Affairs to his last position as Vice President of Marketing &
Government Affairs for the RCA consumer electronics business.  Involved with the launchof landmark
technologies such as digital satellite television, the V-Chip parental control in TV, mp3 music players,
and high-definition TV, Dave is a frequent visitor to the halls of Congress and the FCCin Washington,
D.C.  While at Thomson, he testified twice before the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications
and the Internet and served as Thomson's chief representative to the Washington-based Consumer
Electronics Association.  Dave has served on the Board of Trustees at Butler University, and as
President of the university's Alumni Association.  A new chapter starts in 2008 with the formation of
Arland Communications, Inc., a communications consultancy specializing in helping companies and
individuals reach their target audiences with clarity and ease.  He currently isthe founder and

president of Arland Communications (www.arlandcom.com). Dave and his wife Karen are musicians

at Holy Spirit Catholic Church at Geist, where they sing and accompany many different masses.   

Both are fans of Broadway music and have enjoyed supporting Actors Theatre of Indiana’s many

productions.

 

   
 

Karen Arland President

Karen Arland is an Attorney at Ice Miller, and graduated from the Indiana University School of Law in
Bloomington and from Butler University.  Previously, she served as Corporation Counsel at the City of
Indianapolis and advised Mayor Bill Hudnut on legislative matters before the City-County Council and
the Indiana State Legislature.  Karen and her husband David are also musicians at Holy Spirit Catholic
Church at Geist, where they sing and accompany many different masses.   They are both fans of
Broadway music and have enjoyed supporting Actors Theatre of Indiana’s many productions.

 

Susan Bonanno – Trustee (no photo)

Susan Bonanno was born and raised in Indianapolis, and did under-graduate work at Ball State
University and Indiana University.  She is a graduate with a Bachelor’s of Social Work from the

Indiana University School of Social Work where she also received her Master’s of Social Work. 

During her undergraduate studies she was a case worker for the Child Protection Service and

then worked with the Noble Center to inspire the community to recognize, embrace and include

the contributions of adults and children with developmental disabilities.  From there she worked

as a Social Worker for two inner city public schools until the birth of her first child Alyssa.  She is

an active volunteer with Town Meadow Elementary School, Creekside Middle School, JT’s Hand

(a neonatal fund), Sweet Dreams (designing and decorating bedrooms for terminally ill children)

and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum Guild.  Susan and her husband Tony reside in Carmel,

Indiana and have three daughters Alyssa, Gabrielle and Isabella.

   
 

James Briggs – Trustee

James Briggs was raised in the Ft. Wayne, Indiana area.  Jim is a graduate of DePauw University
and the University of Michigan Law School.  He hung out his shingle in Indianapolis at age 27. 
Since then----over a period of many years----he has had many valuable experiences as a lawyer
and as an "on the firing line" entrepreneur.  He has developed a deep interest in, and respect for,
the positive potential of coupling business performance with applied ethics.  His interests include
his friends (two and four-legged), reading, and attending the superb performances of Actors
Theatre of Indiana. 
   

   
 

Dr. Louis F. Chenette, Ph.D – Trustee

Dr. Louis Chenette, Ph. D., is University Professor Emeritus of Butler University, with a
distinguished career in music and administration. Dr. Chenette held positions at Butler as
music professor, Dean of the Jordan College of Fine Arts, and Dean of Faculty. He was awarded
the Butler Medal of Honor in 1986 for his distinguished contribution to the University. Dr. Chenette
also is a composer, an ISB French Horn player, and a member of the ISB, Inc. Board of Directors.
As a volunteer with ESC, Dr. Chenette is involved with the Management Assistance Program:
Executive Mentoring, Board Development and Strategic Planning. He has also participated in ESC's
Job Preparation Workshops, and has mentored at Arlington High School. Dr. Chenette has served
on many boards of not-for-profits in Indianapolis, especially in music and arts areas.

Cynthia Collins – Trustee

Cynthia Collins received her BFA in Theatre from Ohio University. From that point on,
she has been working in the professional theatre throughout the United States and Europe.
Her Off-Broadway credits include: Fifty Million Frenchmen, Face The Music, Jubilee, That's
The Ticket
with Tony Award winner George S. Irving and Rosemary Clooney: A Musical
Tribute
(Musicals Tonight Series); Valentino, The Musical at the Judith Anderson Theatre;
Lone Star Cafe at The Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre and Gigi at Equity Library Theatre
directed by Gerard Alessandrini, creator of the famed Forbidden Broadway. Cindy has toured
Nationally in Singin' In The Rain and internationally in My Fair Lady as well as multiple
Cruise Line appearances.

Regionally she has been seen in the role of Anybodys in West Side Story (St. Louis MUNY)
directed by Kevin Backstrom, the only director in the world given the rights from the Jerome
Robbins estate to do the show in it's original form; Agnes in On The Twentieth Century
(Goodspeed Opera House);Millie in Good News, Flossie in On The Town, and Perkins in Annie,
(North Shore Music Theatre); Connie in A Chorus Line and Edith in The Pirates Of Penzance
(Burt Reynolds/Jupiter Theatre); and the Atlanta premieres of The Taffetas, A Taffeta Christmas,
A Grand Night For Singing Jacob Marley's Christmas Carol
and MY WAY: A Musical Tribute to
Frank Sinatra
(Georgia Ensemble Theatre).

In 2003 she was fortunate enough to be involved in The Taffetas once again for Pennsylvania
Center Stage's inaugural season and the opening of their new Downtown Theatre in State College,
Pennsylvania; the role of Charity in Sweet Charity, Robert Ann in Nunsense, Alice Miller in My
Favorite Yea
r and Jenny Anydots in CATS (Wagon Wheel Theatre located in Warsaw, Indiana).
Her television credits include: LAW & ORDER, LAW & ORDER SVU, Ed, Sex And The City, OZ,
Now And Again, The Beat, When I Grow Up among others. Throughout her career she has had
the pleasure of working with such artists as Ben Vereen, Sandy Duncan, Claude Aikins, Comden
& Green, Cy Coleman and Avery Schrieber.

As a choreographer, Cindy incorporates the Jack Cole / Jerome Robbins style of dance with a
strong emphasis on acting through dance. She has choreographed for directors Thomas Mills
(The Off- Broadway Musicals Tonight Series), Don Farrell (Georgia Ensemble Theatre,
Pennsylvania Center Stage, Off-Broadway Musicals Tonight Series), and Roy Hine (Wagon
Wheel Theatre). Along with professional engagements, Cindy teaches Musical Theatre Dance
Workshops to young dancers at various dance studios in Georgia and Indiana.In New York City
she is the choreographer to director Thomas Mills at AMDA (American Music and Dramatic
Academy), an intensive two-year program preparing young performers for the
professional Theatre.

A native of Livingston, N.J., Cindy currently resides in Westfield, IN. She studied at the
N.J. School of Ballet with Jay Norman (original Broadway cast and Motion Picture cast member
of West Side Story).

 

Catherine F. Duclos – Secretary (no photo)

Catherine Duclos is a graduate of Indiana University School of Business and Indiana University

School of Law, Bloomington.  She is currently Deputy General Counsel for Thomson Inc. in

Carmel, Indiana where she is responsible for all labor and employment law issues related to

employees of Thomson and its subsidiaries across the country.

 

   
 

Don Farrell

Donald J. Farrell, Jr. – Trustee

Don Farrell has been a member of Actors' Equity Association since 1992 and is a veteran of

the concert and theatrical stage and has worked steadily in practically every capacity of the

business.  He has spent over 23 years working as a professional singer, dancer, actor, director,

choreographer, and producer with a career that includes Off-Broadway, International Tour,

National Tour, Las Vegas, Regional and Educational productions.

As an actor, Don’s credits include: Off Broadway:  Last of the Red Hot Mamas, Irene, Trouble In

Tahiti, Dodsworth, Rosemary Clooney, A Musical Tribute; Regional: Over 70 different regional

productions including:Forever Plaid, A Year with Frog & Toad, Good News!, A Christmas Carol,

Once Upon A Mattress, Sweeney Todd, Perfect Wedding, Side, By Side, By Sondheim,

Romance / Romance, A Grand Night For Singing, Plaza Suite, The Wonder Years, 3 Guys

Naked From The Waist Down, Sophie: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas, COLE, I Love You,

You're Perfect, Now Change!, Sally Blane: The World's Greatest Girl Detective, and many others.

As an accomplished Director and Choreographer and has over 30 different directing / choreography

production credits including: International Tour: The Taffetas; NationalTour: Forever Plaid;

Off-Broadway: Rosemary Clooney: A Musical Tribute; Regional: A Grand Night For Singing,

A Taffetas Christmas, the Southeastern and Indiana premieres of Beyond The Rainbow: The

Frances Gumm Story, COLE, Forever Plaid, I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change!, My Fair Lady

(assistant director), the Georgia and Central Indiana premieres of My Way: A Musical Tribute to

Frank Sinatra,  the Georgia and Indiana premieres of Sisters of Swing: The Story of the Andrews

Sisters, And The World Goes ‘Round: The Music of Kander & Ebb, and Tintypes. His directing credits

include such theatres as: The Frederick Loewe Theatre, 14th Street Y, CAP 21 (Off-Broadway);

Springer Opera House, producer (National Tour & International Tour); Pennsylvania Centre Stage,

Florida Studio Theatre, Georgia Ensemble Theatre, Hampton Playhouse, Cortland Repertory Theatre,

for award winning director Worth Gardner at the Birmingham Theatre, Ordway Theatre, Westchester

Broadway Theatre and the Player's Theatre of Columbus. 

 

On the concert stage, Don's career began back in 1988 when he was asked to sing John William's

America, the Dream Goes On” at the Democratic National Convention in Atlanta. Since then, he has

worked with the late Maestro Erich Kunzel, Keith Lockhart, Jack Everly, Alfred Savia, Crafton Beck, Adrian

Gnam, John Morris Russell, and Robert Moody. His active career as a featured guest soloist includes

concerts with the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Phoenix Symphony

Orchestra, Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra, Savannah Symphony Orchestra, Winston-Salem

Symphony Orchestra, Disney's Premiere Symphony Orchestra, Macon Symphony Orchestra, and the

Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra.

 

He received his Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree, graduating with honors from the internationally

acclaimed University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music.  He has served as a member of

the drama faculty for New York City’s premier musical theatre training conservatory Collaborative Arts

Project 21 and teaches drama workshops and master classes for theatre companies and universities.

Don is a Founder of ActorsTheatre of Indiana(www.actorstheatreofindiana.org) and currently serves as

its’ Producing Artistic Director and Vice-President of Production.  He is co-host of the Indianapolis

Visitors Channel, and sits on the Board of the League of Indianapolis’ Professionally Managed Theatres.

 

   
 

Judith D. Fitzgerald – Trustee

As a performer Judy has been seen on such famous stages as Radio City Music Hall with Glen Close;

Madison Square Garden with Liza Minnelli (conducted by Marvin Hamlisch); and all acrossthe nation

touring with legends Debbie Reynolds, Shirley Jones, Omar Sharif and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr.. Her

experience has led to her performing with other famed artists such as Bob Newhart, Kathy Lee Gifford,

Regis Philbin, Hal Holbrook, and Betty Buckley. Her performing credits also include numerous Off-

Broadway productions: Swingtime Canteen with Tony Award winner Charles Busch at the Blue Angel;

Placido Domingo's operetta VLAD at the Lamb's Theatre; Dodsworth with John Cullum, George Lee

Andrews and Dee Hoty at the York Theatre and the John Houseman Theatre; Irene at the Sylvia &

Danny Kaye Playhouse; and Face The Music and That's The Ticket! with Tony Award winner George

S. Irving at the 14th Street Y. She also collaborated on and performed in Rosemary Clooney: A Musical

Tribute! produced by the Musicals Tonight! Series.

Throughout her career she has had the pleasure of performing in many regional theatres across the

country in such roles as The Narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Kaye in 

The Taffetas as well as A Taffeta Christmas, Emma Goldman in Tintypes, Lizzie in Baby, The Mistress

in Evita, Cole, A Grand Night For Singing, Side, By Side, By Sondheim and award winning director

Worth Gardner's ground breaking production of The Wizard of Oz at The Ordway Theatre in St. Paul,

MN.  She was asked to perform the role of Kaye in The Taffetas once again to help kick off

Pennsylvania Center Stage's inaugural season and the opening of the new Downtown Theatre in State

College, PA.  For ATI she has performed in MY WAY: A Musical tribute to Frank Sinatra (2005, 2009),

COLE, Sisters of Swing: The Story of the Andrews Sisters, And The World Goes 'Round (2006, 2008),

The Taffetas, Forbidden Broadway,and ATI's original works: A Rosie Evening: The Music of Rosemary

Clooney, Broadway Brass: A Tribute to the Legendary Ladies of Broadway.

Her various directing credits include: the Central Indiana premiere of A Year With Frog and Toad

(Zionsville Performing Arts Center, Pike Performing Arts Center, Indianapolis Children’s Museum),

Perfect Wedding (The Pike Performing Arts Center), The Magic Show and Magic Oasis (Indianapolis

Children’s Museum) and will be directing the upcoming ATI production of Nunsense at the new Carmel

Community Playhouse at Clay Terrace. Judy has assistant directed productions of The Taffetas, A

Taffeta Christmas, A Grand Night For Singing, and Tintypes. She co-wrote, directed and is currently

remounting the Rowdie Project, Homerun for Health for the Indianapolis Indians and helped write the

recently Emmy nominated new theme song for the award winning WFYI/PBS show Across Indiana.

Judy has been a Concert Soloist with Maestro Robert Moody and the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra. 

Judy is one of the three founders of Actors Theatre of Indiana and serves as it’s Artistic Director and

Vice-President of Artistic Direction.

 

   
 

Dr. Joseph F. Fitzgerald, MD., F.A.A.P, M.A.C.G., A.G.A.F. - Trustee

Dr. Fitzgerald received his medical degree from Indiana University in 1965.  After completing
pediatric residency, he was an NIH-supported Fellow in Gastroenterology in the Department of
Internal Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.  He was appointed Assistant Professor
of Pediatrics at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1969 and founded the Division of
Pediatric Gastroenterology / Hepatology / Nutrition at the James Whitcomb Riley Hospital for Children. 
Dr. Fitzgerald rose through academic ranks and was made a Professor of Pediatrics in 1977. 
Dr. Fitzgerald has authored/coauthored a manual, 32 book chapters, and over 170 medical articles. 
He has received numerous awards, including MASTER ENDOSCOPIST from the American Society of
Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (2002), MASTER fromthe American College of Gastroenterology (2002),
DISTINGUISHED CLINICIAN from the American Gastroenterological Association (2003), the first
DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD from the North American Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology,
Hepatology, and Nutrition (2004), and the MURRAY DAVIDSON AWARD from the American Academy
of Pediatrics (2005).  Dr. Fitzgerald and his wife, Nell, will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary
in May of 2008.  They have three daughters, three sons-in-law, and four granddaughters.

Tom Roberts - Trustee (no photo)

Tom Roberts was born in New Jersey.  He has a BA in Political Science from Rutgers University.  He

joined the United States Air Force for two years and then went to the University of Chicago where he

received a MA in English Literature with additional graduate work.  He then went to teach at the

University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Northwestern University.  His studies took him abroad with the

Institute for European Studies.  He joined Beaver College as Associate Director at the Center for

EducationAbroad (1979-1988).  Since then he was the Director of the Institute for Study Abroad at

Butler Universtyfor 16 years.  Each program, when Mr. Roberts left was the largest study abroad

program in the country. He has honorary degrees from the University of East Anglia (Honoris Causa)

and is involved in many national and international associations for studies abroad and has received

many various awards for his work in that field.  Mr. Roberts has always been interested in theatre with

a special interest in the work of Moliere and adaptations of his plays to the British stage.  He is a

member of the Board of Trustees for the Institute for Study Abroad, the Study Abroad Foundation,

and the Ensemble Music Society.

   
 

 

Jerome Schnur – Trustee (no photo)

Jerome Schnur was born in Glencoe, IL and grew up on North Shore.  He is a graduate of New Trier

High School and received a BA from Carleton College in 1947 in Economics.  After which Mr. Schnur

joined the United States Air Force for a two-year term and then went to work in Chicago for the next 12

years in commercial finance business during which he financed a good deal of construction equipment. 

Having enjoyed that aspect, he entered sales of construction equipment which led to sales of truck

construction related products which evolved to starting his own business in 1980.  His son  took over

the business in 1996.  He has five children with four living.  His interest in theatre began back in 1954

having joined a Winnetka, IL play reading group and has been a self-proclaimed “ham at heart” ever

since.  He has a love of musicals and had the good fortune to play the role of Nathan Detroit in Guys

and Dolls in 1970 as well as Sister Sarah’s grandfather in 2002.  He has a long love for the theatre

and for music and would like to contribute to the success of Actors Theatre of Indiana and its goals.

 


   
 

David L. Swider – Trustee

David Swider is a partner at Bose McKinney & Evans LLP, representing management in labor and
employment law matters, including labor and employment law litigation, employment discrimination,
NLRB practice and procedure, grievance resolution and arbitration, affirmative action, collective
bargaining, wage and hour, and unemployment compensation. He chairs the Firm’s Labor and
Employment Law Group and has been repeatedly recognized and included in The Best Lawyers
in America
and Indiana Super Lawyers.  He is a frequent speaker and has written numerous
articles on a variety of labor and employment law topics. Mr. Swider is admitted and qualified to
practice before the United States Supreme Court; the United States Court of Appeals for the
Seventh and D.C. Circuits; the United States District Courts for the Northern and Southern
Districts of Indiana; and all courts of the State of Indiana.  Mr. Swider is a graduate of Indiana
University (J.D., magna cum laude, 1978) and Indiana University (B.S. in accounting and finance,
magna cum laude
, 1975), the Articles editor for Indiana Law Review and the President of the
Moot Court Society.  He is a member of the American Bar Association, Labor and Employment
Law Section; Indiana State Bar Association, Labor and Employment Law Section; Indianapolis
Bar Association, Labor and Employment Law Section; Human Resources Committee of the
Indiana Chamber of Commerce (Chairman 2007); Indiana University School of Law Practitioner
Advisory Committee; special advisor to the Indiana Manufacturers Association; Personnel
Committee of the Indiana Bankers Association.

 

Susan Wiland - Trustee (no photo)

A native of Toledo, Ohio and currently a resident of Carmel, Indiana, Susan Wiland is a nurse,
volunteer extraordinaire and a homemaker.  She is currently volunteering for the West Clay
Elementary School, Creekside Middle School, Suite Dreams, the Heartland Film Celebrity Golf
Fundraiser and Hospice. Susan graduated from DePauw University and received a Bachelor
of Science in Nursing. She started her career in nursing at Methodist Hospital, where she
worked in the Coronary Critical Care Unit and Medical Research.  While working in medical
research, Susan became certified as a Clinical Research Associate and worked in the fields
of oncology, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease and gallbladder lithotripsy. 
She gave national and international presentations and was also a speaker at continuing
education classes.  Susan ‘retired’ from nursing to stay at home and raise her children. 
Susan is married to Bruce Wiland and is the proud mother of two children, Emily (14) and
Claire (11).  She enjoys gardening, reading, spending time with her two dogs and the
humiliation of being a beginning golfer.

   
 

Michael Wolinsky – Vice President

Michael Wolinsky (Mike) is a native of West Lafayette and resident of Carmel, Indiana.
Mike Wolinsky develops business for WorkSmart Systems, a Professional Employer
Organization (PEO) that serves as an off-site HR department for small and medium size
companies.  Wolinsky started his career as the public relations director for the Indiana
Convention Center and Hoosier Dome in 1984.   He then served Indiana University athletics
as sports promotion director for six years, before a three-year stint at Jacksonville University
as Associate Athletic Director.   At JU, he served as broadcast talent for Dolphin basketball
and baseball games aired on regional television.   He also served as public address
announcer for the Jacksonville Jaguars.  Returning to Indianapolis in 1996, Wolinsky has
served as chief fund raiser for Children’s Bureau, Inc., director of sales for Grow Indiana
Media Ventures and public relations director for the Indianapolis Indians.  For the past six
years, he has been the voice of Cathedral High School football, broadcasting games on
both News Talk 1430 and Catholic Radio 89.1 FM.  Wolinsky serves on the board of
PrimeLife Enrichment in Carmel, teaches religious school at Indianapolis Hebrew
Congregation and volunteers with the Chrysalis Academy and Special Olympics of Indiana. 
He is single and has two children, Garon (15) and Brittney (14).

Marion County and surrounding areas. ATI maintains a level of excellence that will grow with, and enhance
its home and neighboring districts. Actors Theatre of Indiana will work tirelessly to transcend boundaries,
add a substantial investment to the cultural fiber of it's community, attract the best talent, offer an opportunity
for local arts to create and perform and provide the community a quality choice of live entertainment helping
